The Rock Inn
Rock Inn Haytor

history

Set in the rural hamlet of Haytor Vale, The Rock Inn was originally a coaching Inn dating back to around 1750, as the covered entrance and stone trough beside the old stables both testify. A settlement originally developed here in the Fourteenth Century, around an ancient iron ore mine, but it was not until the opening of the granite tramway to facilitate the transportation of granite from the quarry at the foot of Haytor in September 1820, that the area became more populated.

Originally the quarrymen and their families lived in closer proximity to Haytor, with their own public house, and possibly even a school. When the quarries ceased to be exploited to such a great extent around 1858, the railway fell into disuse. Subsequently families moved from the vast and desolate surroundings of the quarry to the cottages which had been constructed alongside the present Rock Inn.
